Sloe Gin Recipe
Sloe gin, a quintessentially British liqueur, is crafted from the dark purple fruits of the blackthorn - commonly known as sloes. These small, tart berries are traditionally foraged in the autumn months, often after the first frost, which helps to soften their sharpness. This beloved homemade drink is not only a delightful aperitif but also a celebration of seasonal bounty, making it a perfect addition to any gathering.
Equipment
Large Sealable Jars
Ingredients
1kg Sloe Berries
500g Golden Caster Sugar
1l Gin
Tips
Pick the berries once they are ripe and after the first frost, if you can
If picking earlier than the first frost, put the berries in a container and freeze - make sure they are fully thawed before using
Pick berries that are high off the ground, away from passing foxes or dogs
Be careful of the thorns!
Method
1. After picking your berries, prick them with a needle (skip this step if the berries have been frozen).
2. Combine the gin, golden caster sugar and sloe berries in a large resealable jar / bottle - don't forget to sterilise the jar(s) first.
3. Store the jar(s) in a cool dark place and shake once a day for seven days, then once or twice a week for three months.
Three months later
1. Remove the berries and strain the gin through a muslin cloth / sieve.
2. The gin is now ready to drink, however it will continue to mature and improve over time.
